89V51RD2 Starter Kit - Documentation

89V51RD2 Starter kit is the starting point for any beginner to learn microcontrollers.

89V51RD2 is from 8051 families of microcontrollers and has unique feature of simplest in-circuit programming.

This microcontroller can be programmed using RX, TX and DTR pins of RS232 circuit.

Below is the step by step process to program 89V51RD2 in ISP mode using RS232:

1. Get the 89V51RD2 Starter kit
2. Download “FlashMagic” software from www.flashmagictool.com
3. Install FlashMagic software
4. Connect Male to Female serial cable between PC and 89V51RD2 Starter Kit. This cable has Rx, TX, DTR and GND lines connected 1 – 1.
5. Power up the 89V51RD2 Starter Kit
6. Run FlashMagic software
7. Select device = 89V51RD2, COM Port, Baud rate = 2400, Interface = None (ISP),  check mark to “Erase all Flash”
8. Select Hex File from your drive
9. Under menu [Options]=>[Advanced Options] => [Hardware Config] è Check mark Use DTR to control RST
10. On the board, connect Rx, Tx and DTR from RS232 section to P3.0, P3.1 and RST pins of 89V51RD2. RST pin is located near the RST switch.
11. Press “Start” from FlashMagic Software
12. Observe the status of programming
13. If your PC / Laptop has no serial port, then use USB to Serial Converter which supports DTR line too. I have tested it with Bafo make BF-810 (original which comes in air tight plastic container and needs a cutter to open the plastic container). But this USB to Serial converter RSESETS the 89V51RD2 after some duration say a minute or two. In this case, pull out the USB cable from your PC / Laptop to avoid unexpected reset of device.
